The development follows claims by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps that its forces captured two vessels in the strait on Wednesday. According to the military wing, both ships were brought under control and directed towards the Iranian coast after the operation.
The IRGC identified the vessels as MSC Francesca and Epaminodes. In a statement reported by IRIB, the group alleged that the ships were involved in violations while passing through the strategic waterway.
The IRGC accused the crews of tampering with navigational aid systems and endangering maritime security. It further claimed that MSC Francesca was linked to the Zionist regime and alleged that both vessels attempted to exit the Strait of Hormuz without authorisation.

Panama condemns seizure
Panama strongly condemned the seizure of MSC Francesca, calling it illegal. The country’s foreign ministry stated that while the vessel is Italian owned, it is registered under the Panamanian flag.Officials said the ship was transiting the Strait of Hormuz when it was seized and taken into Iranian territorial waters. Panama described the incident as a serious threat to maritime security and an unnecessary escalation at a time when global efforts are focused on keeping the waterway open.

US-Iran tensions and diplomatic signals
The incident occurred hours after US President Donald Trump announced an indefinite extension of a temporary ceasefire. In an interview, Trump indicated that Iran could benefit from a new agreement and urged the country to adopt a practical approach.He said Iran could improve its position significantly if it agreed to a deal, emphasising the need for reason and common sense in negotiations.
Iran response and uncertainty over talks
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian criticised the United States, describing its actions as contradictory and accusing it of acting in bad faith. In a post on X, he stated that while Iran remains open to dialogue, pressure and threats hinder genuine negotiations.Reports have suggested that a new round of talks could take place within 36 to 72 hours. However, Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said Tehran has not yet made a final decision on participating in the proposed discussions.
