Ukraine has revealed a powerful new weapon that could shift the balance of its conflict with Russia — the Flamingo cruise missile. Developed by defense startup Fire Point, the missile is said to be capable of carrying a 2,535-pound warhead and striking targets up to 3,000 kilometers away, signaling a major leap in Kyiv’s domestic arms production.

The Flamingo’s introduction signals Ukraine’s push toward military self-reliance, reducing dependence on Western arms while building itself into a global hub for defense innovation. Its timing — unveiled just after talks between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, and ahead of a Zelenskyy–Trump meeting — underscores its symbolic role in the wider geopolitical arena.

Key details

Fire Point currently manufactures one Flamingo missile per day, with plans to scale up to seven daily by October 2025 — potentially 2,500+ units annually.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expects mass production by December 2025, as Ukraine accelerates toward becoming the so-called “Silicon Valley of defense.”

Ukraine now spends around $10 billion annually on locally made weapons, fueling a defense boom since Russia’s 2022 invasion.

Fire Point’s production chief Iryna Terekh warned: “We are preparing for a bigger, much scarier war.”

If confirmed, this would allow Ukraine to hit strategic Russian targets deep behind enemy lines, including refineries, power plants, and air bases — far beyond the reach of drones or shorter-range weapons like the Neptune, which sank the Russian cruiser Moskva in 2022.

Originally painted bright pink as an inside joke highlighting women’s role in production, the Flamingo has quickly shed its playful color for combat camouflage. Terekh herself emphasized the missile’s symbolic weight, remarking: “You don’t need a scary name for a missile that can fly 3,000 kilometers. The main goal is effectiveness.”

With a warhead weighing over a ton and the ability to strike across European Russia, the Flamingo could mark a new phase in the war — one that Moscow cannot ignore.
