Two soldiers, two militants killed in encounter in Jammu and Kashmir

"An encounter started at Laribal Rajwar (Handwara) forest area in Kupwara district between troops of 21 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and hiding militants during the night."

Two soldiers, two militants killed in encounter in Jammu and Kashmir
SRINAGAR: At least two soldiers and two militants were killed in an encounter at Handwara in Kupwara district of north Kashmir, army said today.

The encounter broke out in Laribal village of Zachaldara in Handwara, 100 kms from here, last night after security forces launched an operation, an army officer said.

In the ensuing gunbattle, two unidentified militants and two soldiers were killed so far, he said.

The operation is still in progress as there were inputs about the presence of other militants in the area, the officer added.

The hiding militants opened fire on the search parties and tried to flee. However, the security forces plugged the escape routes and engaged the militants, police said.

Terming the killing of five hardcore militants in a single operation as a "prize catch", the police said the successful operation would be a "severe setback" to the militants and their designs to carry out subversive activities, especially in south Kashmir.
