Two militants killed in Kulgam encounter

SRINAGAR: Security forces on Monday killed two militants and said an over-ground worker surrendered during an encounter in Kulgam district of south Kashmir.

Acting on a tip off, a joint team of J&K Police, 1RR and 18 battalion of CRPF launched a cordon and search operation in Khudwani and asked the militants to surrender. According to police, over ground worker Arif Ahmad Sofi surrendered while two militants — Dawood Ahmad Allaie and Sayar Ahmad Wani — were killed.

Later at a press meet, Army, J&K Police and CRPF made a joint appeal to militants to surrender, announcing that officers who would motivate militants to drop arms would be rewarded.


Inspector General of Police Muneer Khan along with Inspector General of CRPF Zulfikar Hassan and GoC Victor Force Major General B S Raju addressed the press meet. “Any militant not involved in any heinous crime, we will rehabilitate him and help him to join mainstream. Surrender and we’ll receive you with open arms,” Khan told reporters.

“We want to assure every person in the valley that your future would be safe if you decide to get away from whoever is misguiding you,” Hassan said. After the Kulgam encounter, police said they have recovered an AK-47 rifle, two AK-47 magazines, 63 AK 47 rounds, an INSAS rifle, an INSAS magazine, 60 INSAS rounds, a pistol, a pistol magazine and two pistol rounds.
