In Gurez area of Bandipora, along the Line of Control, two infiltrators were killed when they were attempting to cross the fence, said the Army. A joint operation was carried out after police provided intelligence inputs regarding a likely infiltration attempt, it said.
"A joint operation was launched by Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police in Gurez sector. Alert troops spotted suspicious activity and challenged, which resulted in terrorists opening indiscriminate fire. Troops responded with effective fire, neutralising two terrorists," said a statement by the Srinagar-based Chinar Corps. The operation was still in progress in the evening.
In another incident, Havildar Ikbal Ali lost his life while performing operational duty in Kupwara district. "His courage and dedication will forever inspire us. Chinar Warriors salute the valour and sacrifice of the Braveheart. We stand in solidarity with the bereaved family and are committed to their well-being," read the statement.
The police and Army have maintained that despite ceasefire, several infiltrators have managed to cross LoC and international border and are active in Jammu and some parts of Kashmir. These foreign infiltrators remain "a major challenge" for the security grid, according to officials.
