Merely a month after her wedding, Soni Bisht faced an unimaginable loss when her husband, Sepoy Neeraj Singh Bhandari of the 18 Kumaon Regiment, tragically passed away in a January 2023 accident. Instead of succumbing to grief, Soni transformed her sorrow into strength, choosing to honour her late husband's dream by joining the Indian Army as an officer.

On Saturday, at the Officers Training Academy (OTA) in Chennai, she marched proudly in the Passing Out Parade, now a warrior ready to serve the nation, reported TOI.

“When I first heard about the Veer Nari entry from officers of the Kumaon Regiment, my father, a retired Subedar from the Brigade of Guards Battalion, encouraged me to take this path,” TOI quoted Soni as saying. “It wasn’t easy, but I overcame every challenge,” she added with a smile, as she was commissioned into the Army Ordnance Corps.

Among the 133 officer cadets commissioned was Ved Vijay Neog, a determined cadet from Jorhat, Assam, whose journey to the Indian Army was filled with struggles. Initially recommended for the Indian Military Academy after graduation, Ved had to withdraw due to family financial difficulties. In Delhi, he juggled multiple jobs, working as a barista by day and delivering food by night to make ends meet. Later, he worked as a travel photographer for major brands, but his heart remained focused on wearing the Army uniform. Determined to succeed, he cleared the Combined Defence Services exam and secured his place at the OTA.

The Passing Out Parade saw the commissioning of 133 cadets, including 24 women officers, into various arms and services of the Indian Army. Additionally, five foreign officer cadets, including seven women, from five different nations also completed their training.

During the ceremony, Lt Gen Johnson P. Mathew, Chief of Integrated Defence Staff, presented the Sword of Honour to Manya M. Kumar, while the OTA gold medal went to Pragati Thakur, the silver medal to Manya M. Kumar, and the bronze medal to Surjeet Yadav.

In his address, Lt Gen Mathew urged the newly commissioned officers to uphold the values of selfless service and excellence in everything they do. The ceremony concluded with the pipping of ranks, as the young officers pledged to serve the nation with honour, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to duty.
