Trump says US campaign against Iran will not continue for ‘too long’

US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that the renewed US campaign against Iran would not continue for "too long", after Washington and Tehran exchanged their heaviest fire since July.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump said Iran had been attempting to build a rocket capable of dropping mines and that US forces had destroyed it. He also said Iranian efforts to restore radar and missile systems had been targeted in the latest strikes.

"We took out all of the new equipment ‌that they tried to build along the Strait of Hormuz - some ⁠defensive, some offensive ... It was a very heavy attack last night, and we're prepared to do another one any time we want," he said.

Trump said the US had destroyed equipment that Iran was rebuilding following earlier strikes, including systems that could bolster Tehran's offensive and defensive capabilities around the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.

The latest escalation marks the biggest exchange of fire between the two sides since July, raising fresh concerns over the durability of a fragile period of relative calm.

Trump, however, said the renewed US campaign would not continue indefinitely, telling reporters that it would not go on for "too long".
