Transport aircraft, C295, inducted into Indian Air Force: All you need to know

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday inducted the C295 transport aircraft into the IAF at the Hindon Airbase. The aircraft flew in from Spain where it has been manufactured by Airbus.

The Aircraft
Designed to take off and land from unprepared and short runways, the C295 will replace HS 748 Avro transport aircraft. With a 5-10 tonne capacity, the aircraft will greatly augment the capability of the air force to quickly transport troops and supplies to forward areas. It will also be a platform for rescue missions and supply runs in humanitarian cases. The aircraft can carry 71 troops or 44 paratroopers.


The deal with Airbus
The contract for 56 aircraft was signed on Sept 24, 2021. Airbus will deliver 16 in flyaway condition till Aug 2025 and 40 are to be made by Tata Consortium from till Aug 2031.

What it means
This is the first time that a military transport aircraft will be made in India. It also marks the first time a private sector company will get such expertise in high tech aviation.

Creating Jobs
As part of the Make-in-India deal, over 13,400 parts will be manufactured in India, creating an alternate aviation manufacturing hub to HAL. Over 6,600 jobs will be created directly and indirectly.

The Future The Coast
Guard, Navy and Border Security Force may also places orders for the aircraft. The Navy is likely to order a maritime surveillance version of the aircraft. The air force too may order more of the aircraft.
