SRINAGAR | NEW DELHI: The 48-hour gunbattle between the militants and government forces at Pampore, 14 km from Srinagar, ended on Monday evening, with the killing of three terrorists. Nine people, including two Army captains, a Lance Naik, two CRPF personnel, a civilian and three militants, were killed and 13 CRPF personnel injured during the fierce gunbattle.

“All three militants have been killed. It seems they are from LeT and are not locals,” IGP (Kashmir) SJM Gilani told ET. According to police, the identity of militants is yet to be ascertained.

Even as the encounter was underway, hundreds of residents from the nearby areas tried to march towards the encounter site, raising slogans in favour of militants and freedom. At least 15 protestors were injured in the police action.

CRPF DG Prakash Mishra said in the Capital: “The attacks on security forces in J&K are at an all-time high, with a focus on orchestrating spectacular attacks.” He added: “The initial inputs suggest that the modus operandi of the militants bears similarity to the Udhampur (J&K) and Gurdaspur (Punjab) attacks.”
