According to the news agency, security personnel launched a cordon and search operation in the Tangmarg area acting on intelligence inputs about militant presence. The encounter began when the terrorists opened fire on the forces, officials said.
So far, no casualties have been reported in the exchange of fire, and further details are awaited.
Earlier on Wednesday, two terrorists were killed when an infiltration attempt was thwarted along the Line of Control in Baramulla district.
Security forces remain on high alert following Tuesday’s deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, which claimed the lives of 26 people, most of them tourists.
Meanwhile, PM Modi chaired a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) on Wednesday. According to PTI sources, the high-level discussion is expected to focus on the recent security situation in Jammu and Kashmir in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar, and other senior officials were in attendance, as well.
The prime minister was on his official trip to Saudi Arabia when the Pahalgam attack took place. In light of the situation, he cut short his two-day visit and returned to India on Tuesday night to take stock of the situation and security arrangements in the state.
