Tejas pilot death: India is mourning the tragic loss of Wing Commander Namansh Syal, the Indian Air Force pilot from Kangra district, Himachal Pradesh, who died when an LCA Tejas fighter jet crashed during an aerial display at the Dubai Air Show on Friday.

The pilot, aged 37, was the son of Jagarnath Syal and hailed from Patialkadh in Nagrota Bagwan tehsil.


The Indian Air Force confirmed that the Tejas aircraft met with an accident during the demonstration flight and that Wing Commander Syal sustained fatal injuries.

Himachal CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu Condoles Tejas Pilot’s Death

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu expressed deep grief over the loss of the state’s “brave son.”

HAL Reacts to Tejas Crash

Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL), the manufacturer of the Tejas aircraft, also expressed grief over the incident. In a statement, HAL said:

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of the courageous IAF pilot during the aerial display. Our thoughts are with the bereaved family, and we extend our heartfelt condolences.”

What Happened During the Tejas Crash in Dubai?

The indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas, built by Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL), crashed around 2:10 pm local time (3:40 pm IST) during an eight-minute aerial display at Al Maktoum International Airport.

Was This the First Tejas Crash?

This was the second Tejas crash in 20 months.

The earlier incident took place in March 2024 in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, where the pilot ejected safely.

Friday’s crash, however, marked the first fatal incident involving the aircraft during an international display.

What Did the Indian Air Force Say?

Soon after the accident, the Indian Air Force issued a statement confirming Wing Commander Syal’s death:

“An IAF Tejas aircraft met with an accident during an aerial display at Dubai Air Show today. The pilot sustained fatal injuries in the accident. IAF deeply regrets the loss of life and stands firmly with the bereaved family. A court of inquiry is being constituted to ascertain the cause of the accident.”
