Tata Advanced Systems and Spanish defence firm Indra deliver India’s first homegrown 3D naval radar

Tata Advanced Systems Ltd (TASL), in collaboration with Spanish defence firm Indra, has manufactured and commissioned an advanced naval air surveillance radar aboard an Indian Navy warship, marking a significant milestone in India’s defence manufacturing capabilities.

The 3D Air Surveillance Radar (3D-ASR), Lanza-N, makes TASL the first Indian company to demonstrate the ability to build and integrate next-generation naval surveillance radar systems, the company said in a statement.

"This achievement also marks a key milestone in India's pursuit of defence self-reliance, with significant localisation in system integration and assembly," TASL said. The radar has been seamlessly integrated with all onboard systems and underwent rigorous sea trials to test performance across various naval and aerial platforms.


To support ongoing production, TASL has set up a dedicated radar assembly, integration, and testing facility in Karnataka, which the company said will accelerate deliveries.

Sukaran Singh, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of TASL, highlighted the significance of the partnership with Indra. "Our collaboration with Indra reflects a shared commitment to strengthening radar manufacturing capabilities in India," he said. "By leveraging on-ground synergies, technical expertise, and a robust local supply chain, we are building a strong ecosystem for advanced defence technologies."

Ana Buendia, Head of Indra's Naval Business Unit, said the project extends beyond radar deliveries for multiple vessels. "It has also enabled us to establish a significant collaboration with Tata Advanced Systems, with whom we have worked to establish a radar factory in Bengaluru," she said. "This now provides us with local support to produce systems more efficiently and offer closer service to the client."

According to TASL, Indra’s Lanza-N radar is a long-range, three-dimensional tactical surveillance system capable of detecting friendly and hostile air and surface targets. It is effective against drones, supersonic fighters, anti-radiation missiles, and all types of naval platforms.

This marks the first time the Lanza-N radar will be operational outside Spain, TASL added.
