The Supreme Court on Thursday asked the central government to allow girls to sit for the entrance examinations for admissions to its hitherto male-only military schools and colleges from this year.

The government had assured the court that it was in principle in agreement with the court view that such institutions must be thrown open to girls in furtherance of the constitutional goal of gender equality but had sought more time to implement this.

Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhatti told the court that it would need time to do the ground work for this and girls could only be admitted in these schools and colleges by January 2023. Bhatti said the last date for submission of forms was October 30, 2021, for the examinations scheduled for December 18, 2021.
