Shinkun la tunnel: First blast by PM
Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually carried out the first blast of the Shinkun La Tunnel project in Ladakh's Kargil on Friday. Earlier, Modi paid tribute to bravehearts who made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty in the 1999 Kargil War. The Prime Minister laid a wreath at the Kargil War Memoria in Drass, Ladakh, on the occasion of the 25th Kargil Vijay Diwas.

All-weather tunnel
The Shinkun La Tunnel Project is set to provide all-weather connectivity to Leh, according to a PMO release. It is being constructed on the Nimu-Padum-Darcha Road. According to a report by The Times of India, the tunnel will take at least two years to complete since it will have cross-passages at a gap of 500 metres.

Twin-tube tunnel, highest altitude
Once completed, it will be the highest tunnel in the world. The Shinkun La Tunnel consists of a 4.1 km long Twin-Tube tunnel to be constructed at around 15,800 feet.
