Saudi Arabia using Chinese DF-15A missile in Yemen? Wreckage from explosion site points towards dragon's hand

Saudi Arabia may have used a Chinese-origin DF-15A short-range ballistic missile against Houthi forces in Yemen, after debris believed to belong to the weapon was found in Marib Governorate, as per a TOI report. Images circulating online appear to show a DF-15A designation on the missile component, although neither the identification nor its connection to Saudi forces has been confirmed.

The wreckage was reportedly discovered in Raghwan district, where images circulating online appeared to show the designation “DF-15A” on part of the missile. Open-source analysts have identified the debris as belonging to the Chinese-made short-range ballistic missile and linked it to Saudi Arabia, but both the identification and ownership remain unconfirmed.

The discovery comes amid renewed fighting in Yemen, where Houthi forces and Saudi-backed Yemeni forces have intensified hostilities after a prolonged period of relative calm. The Houthis have also increased missile and drone attacks against targets in Saudi Arabia, while Riyadh has stepped up strikes on Houthi positions.

DF-15A is a Chinese short-range ballistic missile

The DF-15 is a road-mobile, solid-fuelled short-range ballistic missile developed by China. The DF-15A is one of its variants and is designed to carry a conventional warhead.

According to the Center for Strategic and International Studies’ Missile Threat project, the DF-15 family has a launch weight of about 6,200 kg and can carry a payload of between 500 and 750 kg. Its range is estimated at roughly 600 to 900 km for the family, depending on the variant and payload. The DF-15A itself is listed with an estimated range of around 600 km.

The missile uses an inertial guidance system and can carry high-explosive payloads. Other members of the DF-15 family have been developed for missions including attacks on hardened facilities and runways.

Why the debris matters for Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia has not officially acknowledged operating the DF-15A.

The country has, however, previously been linked to Chinese ballistic-missile systems. Riyadh publicly displayed Chinese DF-3A missiles in 2014, while reports have also linked Saudi Arabia to the DF-21, although the latter has never been officially confirmed.

If the debris is conclusively identified as a DF-15A and its launch is traced to Saudi forces, it could provide evidence of another Chinese-origin ballistic missile system in the Saudi arsenal.

The discovery is therefore significant not only because of the weapon itself, but also because Saudi Arabia has historically maintained considerable secrecy around its ballistic-missile capabilities.

Missile debris found as Yemen fighting intensifies

The suspected missile component emerged as the conflict in Yemen has entered another period of escalation.

Houthi forces have made territorial gains along Yemen’s western coast and have intensified attacks on Saudi targets, while Saudi Arabia has responded with airstrikes. The renewed clashes have raised concerns over a broader return to large-scale fighting following years of relative de-escalation after the 2022 UN-brokered truce.

The War Zone noted that the debris could represent the first known combat use of a Saudi ballistic missile of this type, but stressed that the available evidence does not establish either the missile’s identity or who operated it.

For now, the suspected DF-15A remains an open-source identification rather than a confirmed Saudi deployment.
