"We have seen reports on US sanctions. India has a robust legal and regulatory framework on strategic trade and non-proliferation controls. We are also a member of three key multilateral non- proliferation export control regimes - the Wassenaar Arrangement, the Australia Group and the Missile Technology Control Regime, and have been effectively implementing relevant UNSC (United National Security Council) sanctions and UNSC resolution 1540 on non- proliferation," the MEA spokesperson said. "Our understanding is that the sanctioned transactions and companies are not in violation of Indian laws."
The ministry, however, added that in keeping with India's established non-proliferation credentials, it is working with all relevant departments and agencies to sensitise domestic companies on applicable export control provisions, as also inform them about new measures being implemented that could impact Indian companies in certain circumstances.
The spokesperson further said that regular strategic trade and export control outreach events for domestic industries and stakeholders are being carried out by central government agencies, adding that India is in touch with the US authorities to clarify issues. People aware of the matter told ET that the sanctioned Indian firms are largely trading companies that have no business links or accounts with the US.
