Russian arms exports to India fall 42% between 2014-18 and 2009-13: Sipri

Russia’s arms export to India fell 42% between 2014-18 and 2009-2013, according to a report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). In the same period, India’s arms imports decreased 24%, which was partly attributed to delays in deliveries of arms produced under license from foreign suppliers, such as combat aircraft ordered from Russia in 2001 and submarines ordered from France in 2008. Still, India was the world’s second largest importer of major arms in 2014-18.

• A total of 155 countries imported major arms in 2014–18. The top five arms importers — Saudi Arabia, India, Egypt, Australia and Algeria— accounted for 35% of total arms imports in 2014–18.

• 67 countries exported major arms in 2014–18. The top five — the US, Russia, France, Germany and China — accounted for 75% of all arms exports. The top five in 2014–18 were the same as in 2009–13 but their combined total exports of major arms were 10% higher.

• Top 25 arms exporters accounted for 99% of the world's major arms exports in 2014-18, with a total of 87% coming from states in North America and Europe.

• Volume of international transfers of major arms in 2014-18 was 7.8% higher than in 2009-13 and 23% higher than in 2004-2008.
