The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved a project worth more than Rs 40,000 crore to build eight Next-Generation Corvettes for the Indian Navy. The contract for the warships is expected to be signed in the coming days with two state-owned shipbuilders, Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata and Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) in Goa, according to government officials quoted by ANI. "The deal worth over Rs 40,000 crore was cleared by the CCS led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in its meeting held on Wednesday. The contract for the eight warships would be signed in the next few days with Garden Reach Shipbuilders, Kolkata and Goa Shipyard Limited," the officials told ANI.

The eight warships will be high-speed surface combatants, each with a displacement of around 2,000 tonnes and a maximum speed of approximately 30 knots.

They will feature an indigenous stealth design developed by the Indian Navy. The vessels are intended to strengthen the Navy's operational capabilities and support its maritime security missions across the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).

The construction of all eight vessels in India is expected to support domestic shipbuilding capabilities and strengthen the country's indigenous defence manufacturing ecosystem.

How the new corvettes will strengthen India's maritime security

According to the Ministry of Defence, the Next-Generation Corvettes will be adaptable, multi-role platforms capable of undertaking a range of maritime security operations.

Their induction is expected to strengthen the Indian Navy's combat readiness and operational presence across the Indian Ocean Region, a strategically important maritime area.

The project also aligns with the government's SAGAR vision, Security and Growth for All in the Region, and its Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, which aims to expand domestic manufacturing and reduce dependence on foreign defence suppliers.
