R-Day 2024: From first twin seater Tejas to record increase in defence capital budget: India's 'Atmanirbharta in Defence'

As India marks its 75th Republic Day, significant developments in the nation's defense sector come to the forefront, emphasizing the spirit of 'Atmanirbharta' or self-reliance. In an announcement by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, the allocation for domestic industry in the defense capital procurement budget for the fiscal year 2023-24 has seen a remarkable increase to 75%, a noteworthy jump from the previous fiscal year's 68%.

Boost for Our Own Industries

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh has announced a big step towards relying on our own resources for defense needs. In the budget for the coming year (2023-24), a whopping 75% of the funds for buying defense equipment will be directed towards our own industries. This is a major increase from the previous year, where 68% of the budget was allocated for domestic production.


Empowering Indigenous Production

In a recent announcement during the 'Swavlamban 2.0' event, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh unveiled the Fifth Positive Indigenisation List (PIL). This list comprises 98 items, including complex systems, sensors, weapons, and ammunition that will be produced within the country, following the guidelines set in the Defence Acquisition Procedure 2020.

Milestone for Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL)

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has achieved a significant milestone by delivering the first twin-seater Light Combat Aircraft 'Tejas' to the Indian Air Force (IAF) in October 2023. This achievement not only marks a technological advancement but also aligns with the vision of 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' or a self-reliant India.

Prime Minister Modi's Historic Flight

In another historic moment, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a flight in the Tejas aircraft in November. This was the first time an Indian Prime Minister flew a fighter aircraft, showcasing the capabilities of our indigenous Tejas aircraft firsthand.

Approvals to Strengthen Armed Forces

The Defense Acquisition Council, led by Rajnath Singh, has given the green light to proposals worth over Rs 3.50 lakh crore. The interesting part is that 98% of this amount, which is around Rs 2.20 lakh crore, will be spent on defense equipment produced within our own borders. This shows a clear preference for our domestic industries.

Projects Driving Modernization

Several projects are underway to modernize and enhance the capabilities of our Armed Forces. These projects include acquiring 26 Rafale marine Aircrafts, 16 Sky Guardians, 15 Sea Guardians, and various other defense systems, all produced domestically. This move not only boosts our defense but also provides a significant push to our local industries.

Showcasing DRDO's Achievements

The Defense Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) will be a highlight during the Republic Day parade. The theme of their tableau is 'Women Power in Protecting the Nation,' showcasing the crucial role women scientists play in defense research. The tableau displays various defense technologies covering Land, Air, Sea, Cyber, and Space.
