Proud of my son’s sacrifice... My 2 sons ready to join Army: Martyr Jaikishore’s father

NEW DELHI: Patriotic fervour dominated the villages of Bihar’s five soldiers who were killed by the Chinese at the Galwan Valley.

The last rites of Havildar Sunil Kumar (34), whose mortal remains were flown to Patna, were performed on the banks of Ganga near his village Taranagar on Thursday. Bodies of the other four soldiers — Chandan Kumar, Aman Kumar, Kundan Kumar and Jaikishore Singh — were flown to Patna on Thursday evening. Their mortal remains will be taken to their villages in Samastipur, Saharsa, Viashali and Bhojpur.

Chief minister Nitish Kumar, his deputy Sushil Kumar Modi and several other state ministers paid their tributes to the martyrs at the Patna airport. BJP state president Sanjay Jaiswal and RJD’s Tejashwi Yadav were among the several leaders who paid their respects to the soldiers.


“I am proud of my son’s supreme sacrifice. We should not leave even a single inch of our land at the border,” Jaikishore Singh’s father Rajkapoor Singh told ET over phone from his village Chakafateh in Vaishali district. Singh’s eldest son Nand Kishore Singh is also in the Army. “My other two sons, Shivam (17) and Kaushal (16), are also ready to join the Army,” he said.

Jaikishore’s father said he had last spoken to his son about a month ago. “He (Jaikishore) told me he is moving towards the mountain and would not be in a position to talk due to the poor network,” said Rajkapoor Singh.

Kundan Kumar’s uncle Mahendra Yadav also echoed similar sentiment. “We are proud of Kundan’s sacrifice. The government should build a memorial of Kundan at any prominent place,” he told ET over phone from his village in Sahrasa. He also appealed to people to boycott Chinese products. Kundan is survived by his wife Baby Devi and two children.

The scene was no different in Havildar Sunil Kumar’s village Taranagar. “There should be no relation with China now,” said Sunil’s elder brother Anil Kumar.
