A possible terror plot was likely foiled near the Indo-Pakistan border in Amritsar after the Border Security Force (BSF) and Punjab Police recovered a significant cache of arms, ammunition and grenades near village Bharopal.

According to PTI, the cache included two hand grenades and was found by the BSF and Punjab Police during a joint search operation near Bharopal village on Wednesday evening. A BSF official said the recovery consisted of two hand grenades, three pistols with six magazines, and 50 rounds of ammunition.

"The swift and coordinated action with Punjab Police has prevented a possible major terror incident," the BSF official said.

This seizure is one of the major recoveries of arms and explosives along the International Border in the last week. Just a few days ago, the BSF and Punjab Police had recovered five hand grenades, 4.50 kg of RDX, four pistols, 220 rounds, two remote controls and a battery charger from Sahowal village, also in Amritsar district.

The arms recovery comes shortly after the deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, on April 22, which left 26 people dead. Most of the victims were tourists. The attack has sharply escalated tensions between India and Pakistan, with New Delhi calling the incident an act of terrorism and linking Islamabad for the killings. Pakistan has denied any role in the incident and said it would retaliate to any fire from the Indian side.

In response to the worsening situation, India downgraded diplomatic ties, while Pakistan responded by shutting its airspace to Indian airlines, among other measures. India has closed the Attari border for all movement as a security measure after the terrorist attack in Pahalgam in India's Kashmir.

Meanwhile, Pakistan has continued to violate the ceasefire agreement along the Line of Control.

The Pakistan Army has carried out unprovoked small arms firing for the seventh night in a row across the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir, targeting the Kupwara, Uri and Akhnoor sectors.

The Indian Army has responded with equal force to what it called incessant firing from across the border.

The attack has also drawn international attention. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio condemned the Pahalgam assault and described it as "horrific." He expressed sorrow over the loss of life and reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to working with India in its fight against terrorism. During a phone call, Rubio urged both India and Pakistan to focus on “de-escalating tensions” in South Asia in order to maintain regional peace and security.
