Policeman killed, CRPF jawan injured in J&K militant attack

A policeman was killed and a CRPF jawan injured on Sunday afternoon in a suspected militant attack in Pulwama district of southern Kashmir, just two days ahead of Union Home minister Amit Shah's scheduled visit to J&K.

Shah is expected in J&K on October 4 for a two-day visit where he will address gatherings in Rajouri of Jammu and Baramullah of Kashmir.

He is also likely to chair a security review meeting in Srinagar.


The incident happened in Pinglan village of Pulwama when militants opened fire on a joint team of the forces in which a policeman and a CRPF personnel were injured.

They were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where the special police officer -- Javed Ahmad Dar-- died. The armed forces personnel immediately cordoned off the area and launched a massive operation to nab the attackers.

"Terrorists fired upon a joint naka party of the CRPF and police at Pinglana of Pulwama. One policeman got martyred and a CRPF personal injured. Reinforcement has been sent and the area being cordoned," J&K police officials informed.

In another incident in the Valley, a militant was killed in an encounter in Shopian district of southern Kashmir. The J&K police informed that the militant killed in the encounter was identified as Naseer Ahmad Bhat of Lashkar-e-Toiba. Additional Director General of Police in Kashmir informed that he was involved in several militant activities and had escaped from an encounter recently.

Meanwhile, authorities in Srinagar closed the popular Sunday Market early in the afternoon citing security reasons.
