As the war with Iran escalates with each day and Washington’s wallet goes into a crunch, the Pentagon has reportedly asked the White House to approve a request exceeding $200 billion to fund the Tehran conflict, according to The Washington Post.

The proposal, however, is expected to face significant resistance on Capitol Hill, the Post reported citing a senior administration official.

The scale of the request would go far beyond the cost of the administration’s air campaign so far and is aimed at rapidly replenishing and expanding stockpiles of critical weapons as US and Israeli forces have struck thousands of targets over the past three weeks, three individuals familiar with the discussions told the Post.

The funding push remains fluid, with uncertainty over how much the White House will ultimately seek from Congress, and some White House officials reportedly believe the proposal may struggle to gain approval amid political divisions and scrutiny over US involvement in the conflict.

Officials cited by The Washington Post further said the Pentagon has been weighing multiple funding scenarios over recent weeks as battlefield requirements evolve, reflecting the scale and pace of the campaign.

The war has already incurred costs exceeding $11 billion in its early stages, underscoring how quickly expenditures are accumulating.

Deputy Defence Secretary Steven Feinberg has reportedly been central to internal efforts aimed at addressing shortages and strengthening domestic production capacity, particularly for advanced weaponry that has been heavily used in strikes.

The request also reflects broader concerns within the administration about maintaining military readiness while continuing sustained operations across multiple fronts.

Political battle likely in Congress

The proposal is expected to spark a major political debate in Congress, where views on continued involvement in the war remain divided.

Democrats have been sharply critical of the conflict, while Republicans have generally expressed support for additional funding but have yet to align on a clear legislative strategy.

According to the repot, any supplemental package would likely need to overcome the Senate’s 60-vote threshold, making passage more challenging.

Meanwhile, public opinion on the war remains cautious, adding further pressure on lawmakers as they consider the financial and strategic implications of continued engagement.

Experts quoted by The Washington Post suggest the funding request could become a key test of political support for the war, with anti-war sentiment likely to shape the debate.

Budget pressures

The funding request also comes against the backdrop of broader debates over defence spending, including earlier proposals by President Donald Trump for a $1.5 trillion military budget.

Internal discussions within the White House Office of Management and Budget have reportedly raised concerns about the scale of proposed spending.

While Congress has previously approved large allocations for overseas conflicts, such as the roughly $188 billion for the war in Ukraine, the current request stands out for its size and urgency.

Analysts cited by The Washington Post note that even if funding is approved, expanding production of advanced weapons systems is not immediate, as it depends on workforce availability, industrial capacity, and supply chain constraints.
