Mahajan's father, retired lecturer Dev Raj, remembered his son as a brave soldier, who wanted to do so- mething for the country. Dev Raj said he was aggrieved but was feeling proud to be a martyr's father.
"He was very shy but a bright boy," a teary-eyed Raj said. He said "this war" should stop now and politicians must understand that brave men are sacrificing lives for the country. "There are forces who have vested interests." A close friend recalled that Mahajan had joined the Army against the wishes of his family. "He had a passion to join the Army and he fulfilled his dream." He remembered Mahajan as a devoted and diligent student, who was commissioned in 2009.
Separately, the body of Captain Pawan Kumar, who laid down his life near Srinagar as well, was flown to his native place, Jind in Haryana, where his last rites were performed.
Kumar had turned 22 on Army Day last month. The only son of his parents, he belonged to elite Special Forces and had earlier eliminated three militants in two counter-insurgency operations.
