Pakistan shelling kills 9-year-old girl, Army man near LoC in Jammu and Kashmir

SRINAGAR: An army jawan and a nine-year-old girl were killed and six others were injured in ceasefire violation by Pakistan along the line of control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir on Monday.

Naik Mudasir Ahmad, 37, of Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry, who hails from Tral area of south Kashmir was killed when mortar shells landed on his bunker in Rajouri district. He is survived by his wife and two children.

The minor girl, identified as Sadia, was killed in Pakistani firing in Poonch.According to his relatives, Mudasir had joined back duty recently after a month long holiday at his home in Kashmir and was also planning to apply for voluntary retirement scheme.

“The nation will always remain indebted to him for the supreme sacrifice and devotion to duty,” a Srinagar-based defence spokesperson said. Deputy chief minister Nirmal Singh said the “sacrifices rendered by jawans would not go waste and a befitting reply would be given to thwart nefarious designs of India’s enemies”.

According to Rajouri district magistrate Shahid Iqbal Choudhary, heavy mortal shelling was reported in forward areas of tehsil Manjakote in the morning, affecting many villages including Panjgrain, Rajdhani and Naika. Two civilians were injured during shelling.

District administration was put on high alert and 16 schools were closed and residents were asked to stay indoors.
