The normally vibrant tourist destination now wears a deserted look, with heightened security and tightened patrols. Visuals from the area show empty streets, as fear and uncertainty grip locals and visitors alike.
Following the attack, multiple organisations called for a Jammu bandh, reported ANI. The tension in the region has also led many tourists to cut short their trips. Sameer Bhardwaj, a tourist from Delhi, shared that although he had plans to visit Pahalgam, the unfolding situation prompted him to return home early. "We've been in Kashmir for three days, but after what happened, we're heading back to Delhi. This is the first time something like this has happened here—it's very wrong," he said.
Leaders across the political spectrum condemned the attack. National Conference senior leader Shekh Bashir Ahmad called it a "conspiracy to cripple Jammu and Kashmir’s economy," especially with the region relying heavily on tourism. “This attack is designed to scare away tourists just as the season picks up. People had come here for a peaceful holiday, and innocent lives were targeted. The people of J&K must see through this conspiracy,” he said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, upon returning from Saudi Arabia, was immediately briefed at the Delhi airport by National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, and other top officials. The high-level meeting focused on assessing the security situation and formulating a response.
The attack, which occurred in the Anantnag district on Tuesday, specifically targeted Hindu tourists. Security and police teams, along with ambulances, responded swiftly to the scene.
