Operation Sohan launched by Indian Army, CRPF and J&K Police neutralise two terrorist in Udhampur, search ongoing

Two terrorists suspected to be affiliated with Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) were killed during an ongoing joint counter-terrorism operation in a remote, high-altitude forest area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur district, officials said on Thursday.

The operation, involving the Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), was underway in the Brattal Sohan and Khubban areas of Majalta despite incessant rain and difficult weather conditions. The Army confirmed that two terrorists had been killed.

What is Operation Sohan?

Operation Sohan is an ongoing joint counter-terrorism operation being conducted by the Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police and the CRPF in the Brattal Sohan and Khubban areas of Majalta in Udhampur district.

According to the Jammu-based White Knight Corps, the operation was launched following intelligence inputs indicating the presence of terrorists in the Brattal area. Security forces began the targeted operation during the intervening night of September 16 and 17 and are continuing search and surveillance activities to locate any remaining threat.


The operation is being conducted in difficult terrain amid hostile weather and poor visibility. Security forces remain deployed in the area as the search continues.

Army confirms two terrorists killed

The White Knight Corps said the operation was based on confirmed intelligence inputs regarding the presence of terrorists in the general area of Brattal, Udhampur.

“Despite hostile weather, difficult terrain and poor visibility, troops of White Knight Corps, Police and CRPF launched a targeted counter-terrorism operation, resulting in the neutralisation of two terrorists,” the Army formation said in a post on X.

It added that the operation remained in progress, with search and surveillance continuing in the area. Security forces were also deployed to track and neutralise any remaining threat.

Security forces had been tracking terrorist movement

Officials said police and security forces had been searching for a terrorist group after its movement was noticed in the densely forested area the previous week.

Following fresh intelligence inputs, security forces cordoned off a specific area at around 9 pm on Wednesday, leading to the initial contact with the suspected terrorists.

Several rounds of firing and blasts were heard soon after the operation began. Officials said the area remained largely quiet through the night before the situation changed on Thursday morning.

The terrorists subsequently opened heavy fire in an attempt to break the security cordon, following which additional forces were rushed to the area.

The search and surveillance operation was continuing when the latest reports were received.
