Army Chief General Dhiraj Seth has directed serving officers to prioritise combat readiness and prepare for Operation Sindoor 2.0 and Operation Snow Leopard 2.0, stressing that operational preparedness must remain the Indian Army's foremost focus. In a letter titled "Together Towards Excellence", issued on July 6, 2026, General Seth instructed officers to continuously validate preparedness through "spot reviews" and ensure mission readiness across equipment, ammunition, logistics, sustainment and human resources, according to a TOI report.

The letter outlines the Army Chief's priorities for operational effectiveness, leadership, technological adaptation, ethics and the force's role in supporting India's long-term national objectives.

Combat readiness remains top priority

General Seth instructed officers to maintain mission readiness in a comprehensive manner, emphasising that preparedness extends beyond equipment capability and ammunition availability. He said readiness must also include sustainment, logistics, human resource intangibles and overall operational capability.

He called for regular "spot reviews" to validate operational preparedness and directed officers to remain ready for Operation Sindoor 2.0 as well as Operation Snow Leopard 2.0.

What is Operation Sindoor?

Operation Sindoor refers to the rapid, coordinated military campaign launched by India in May 2025 following the Pahalgam terror attack.

The four-day tri-services operation was conducted between May 7 and May 10, 2025, and involved precision missile and air strikes on terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan.

The operation was launched in response to the April 22, 2025, terror attack in Pahalgam, which claimed the lives of 26 civilians.

During the operation, India targeted militant training camps belonging to Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed across the border.

Six Indian military personnel, including five Army personnel and one Indian Air Force officer, lost their lives during the conflict. Their names were later inscribed on the National War Memorial.

What is Operation Snow Leopard?

Operation Snow Leopard was the Indian Army's strategic and tactical response to incursions by the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) in Eastern Ladakh during the 2020 military standoff.

The operation was launched after China refused to restore the status quo ante. It began in May 2020 and included the period of the Galwan Valley clashes on June 15, 2020.

India subsequently carried out a rapid counter-deployment on the intervening night of August 29 and 30, 2020. Using specialised troops, the Army secured strategic heights and key positions overlooking Chinese deployments, including Rechin La, Rezang La and areas along the Pangong Tso lake.

Focus on practical solutions and battlefield adaptability

The Army Chief urged officers to adopt a pragmatic and practical approach while dealing with operational challenges.

He said officers should think beyond conventional approaches and develop simple, implementable solutions instead of waiting for ideal ones. According to the letter, incremental improvements can collectively produce significant operational gains.

At the same time, he stressed that battle-tested procedures continue to hold value and said the Army must preserve its ability to adapt, improvise and overcome challenges without compromising accountability or quality.

Warfare undergoing rapid transformation

General Seth said warfare is at an inflection point and is transitioning towards a man-unmanned concept driven by artificial intelligence, machine learning and new warfare domains.

He wrote, "We stand at an inflection point, where warfighting is transiting to a man-unmanned concept with artificial intelligence, machine learning and new warfare domains that were earlier considered as..."

Army's role in Viksit Bharat

The Army Chief said the Army's responsibilities extend beyond defending the country's borders and contribute directly to the national vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047.

According to the letter, achieving this goal requires professional competence along with maturity and the ability to view challenges from a broader perspective. He asked officers to continuously enhance their professional standards, remain well-read and stay intellectually ahead of emerging challenges.

General Seth also stressed that solutions should be developed at the unit level rather than always being sought from higher echelons.

Lead by example

General Seth urged officers to lead by personal example by maintaining physical fitness and sharing hardships with their troops.

He also called for creating a culture of mutual respect and a conducive environment where subordinates are encouraged to learn, innovate and make limited mistakes safely.

Social media is a new battlefield

The Army Chief cautioned that the cognitive domain, particularly social media, has become a new battlefield where adversaries conduct grey-zone activities.

He instructed officers to exercise restraint and remain prudent in their online conduct.

Ethics, empathy and work-life balance

Concluding the letter, General Seth reminded officers to uphold the highest standards of ethics and empathy, particularly towards veterans.

He also instructed officers to balance their professional responsibilities with family, health and personal growth.

Describing soldiering as more than a profession, General Seth said it is a way of life and expressed full confidence in the judgment, competence and resilience of the Army's officers.
