New footage of North Korean troops in Russia sparks concerns: Are they headed for Ukraine?
Russia-Ukraine War: Recent reports confirm that North Korea has deployed approximately 1,500 soldiers to Russia for military training, with plans to send up to 12,000 troops to support Moscow's efforts in the Ukraine conflict. This development hig...
Videos obtained by the Ukrainian Center for Strategic Communication and Information Security show North Korean soldiers lining up to receive uniforms and equipment at a training ground. The footage, which appeared on social media, reveals troops arriving at the Sergeevka Training Ground near the Russian-Chinese border. Upon their arrival, recruits filled out questionnaires to provide sizes for their military attire, reported CNN.
In the background, a Russian speaker can be heard stating, “we can’t film them,” followed by “There are more… there are millions of them here. Here are the new reinforcements. This is just the beginning. There are more.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed deep concerns over this development, claiming that North Korea is preparing to send an additional 10,000 soldiers to bolster Russia’s military efforts. He emphasized the urgency of the situation during a NATO summit, stating, “From intelligence that I have… they are preparing 10,000 soldiers, different soldiers, land forces, technical personnel.”
This increase in troop numbers aligns with South Korean reports that suggest North Korea may ultimately deploy as many as 12,000 troops to Russia. The NIS has noted that North Korean soldiers are reportedly receiving Russian military uniforms, weapons, and even fake identification to disguise their presence on the battlefield.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed that “thousands” of North Korean soldiers are en route to Russia, as reported by CNN. According to Zelensky, intelligence suggests that the North is preparing to deploy up to 10,000 soldiers, comprising various military specialities. “From intelligence that I have... they are preparing 10,000 soldiers, different soldiers, land forces, technical personnel,” he said during a recent NATO summit.
Ukrainian military intelligence chief Kyrylo Budanov has warned that North Korean troops could significantly enhance Russia's capacity to maintain control over occupied territories. Reports indicate that approximately 2,600 North Korean soldiers are expected to be deployed to the Kursk region by November 1.
Concerns over these developments have prompted South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol to convene a security meeting, emphasizing that the international community must respond using “all available means.” The potential deployment of North Korean forces could escalate the conflict further, raising alarms within the region.
The implications of this military alliance are profound, not only for the ongoing conflict in Ukraine but also for regional security dynamics. While North Korea possesses one of the world's largest military forces, with 1.2 million soldiers, many of its troops lack combat experience. Experts have pointed out that sending well-trained special operations forces might be North Korea's way of mitigating the risk of defections among less trusted conscripts.
