Navy ranks to be renamed to reflect Indian culture: PM Modi

"With pride in our heritage, I am proud to announce that the ranks in the Indian Navy would be renamed according to Indian culture," the prime minister said, adding that efforts are also on to increase the role of women in the armed forces.

Ranks in the Indian Navy will be renamed to reflect Indian culture and uniforms of sailors and officers will soon display the legacy of Shivaji Maharaj, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced.

Speaking at the Navy Day event at Sindhudurg, where he witnessed an operational demo by naval forces, the PM said that after changes in the Naval ensign that did away with colonial symbols, more changes were in the works.

"With pride in our heritage, I am proud to announce that the ranks in the Indian Navy would be renamed according to Indian culture," the prime minister said, adding that efforts are also on to increase the role of women in the armed forces.


"I want to congratulate the Navy for appointing the country's first woman commanding officer on a naval ship," he said.
