Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd. has been given the green light to construct three additional Scorpene submarines for the Indian Navy. This was the latest proposal among three others that were agreed upon during the meeting of the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) on Thursday, with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh presiding over the proceedings.

According to a tweet from the office of the Defence Minister, the DAC has approved the acceptance of necessity for procuring three more Scorpene submarines under the Buy (Indian) category. Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders will undertake the construction of these submarines. The move is expected to bolster the Indian Navy's operational readiness and maintain the desired force level. Additionally, it will generate substantial employment opportunities within the domestic sector.

The procurement of additional submarines, emphasizing a higher indigenous content, is viewed as crucial not only for strengthening the Indian Navy but also for promoting self-reliance and expertise in submarine construction. Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders stands to benefit from this contract, further enhancing its capabilities in the field.

The term Buy (Indian) signifies the acquisition of products from Indian vendors that have been designed, developed, and manufactured domestically, with a minimum of 50% indigenous content. This criterion ensures that the submarines procured will have a significant contribution from Indian suppliers, thereby supporting the government's "Make in India" initiative and reducing dependency on foreign imports.

The decision to construct three more Scorpene submarines reflects India's commitment to modernize its naval fleet and bolster national security. These submarines, known for their advanced technology and stealth capabilities, will augment the country's maritime defense capabilities.

By investing in the expansion of its submarine fleet, India aims to enhance its maritime presence and secure its strategic interests in the Indian Ocean region. The decision also underscores the government's focus on boosting the domestic defense industry, strengthening self-sufficiency, and fostering the growth of indigenous defense manufacturing capabilities.

The construction of these Scorpene submarines by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders is a significant step towards achieving these objectives. The project is expected to not only reinforce the country's defense capabilities but also contribute to the growth of the domestic economy through job creation and the development of specialized expertise in submarine construction.
