Bangladesh Army on Tuesday announced a major rejig in its top-level ranks, according to local media reports. This comes after the country's President Mohammed Shahabuddin dissolved the parliament, a day after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled the country.

Hasina's exit came after hundreds of people were killed in a crackdown on demonstrations that began as protests against preferential job quotas and swelled into a movement demanding her downfall.

General Waker-Uz-Zaman, Bangladesh's army chief, announced Hasina's resignation in a televised address and said an interim government would be formed.

Chief Zaman spent nearly four decades rising to the top of the military and said he was "taking full responsibility" after Hasina was ousted.

Among the changes announced, Major General Ziaul Ahsan has been relieved from service, as per reports.

Bangladesh has been engulfed by protests and violence that began last month after student groups demanded scrapping of a controversial quota system in government jobs. That escalated into a campaign to seek the ouster of Hasina, who has been in power for 15 years and most recently swept to a fourth straight term in January.

Nearly 250 people have been killed in the violence.
