Mahendragiri, the last frigate built under Project 17A launched at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd in Mumbai today. Sudesh Dhankhar, wife of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar lunched the follow-ons of the Project 17 Class Frigates (Shivalik Class).

Project 17A ships have been designed in-house by the Indian Navy's Warship Design Bureau. "The launch of Mahendragiri is an apt testament to the incredible progress our nation has made in building a self-reliant naval force," the bureau said.

Mahendragiri, named after a mountain peak in eastern Ghats located in Odisha, is the seventh ship of the Project 17A frigates. With a displacement of 6,670 tonnes, this vessel stands as a testament to modern naval engineering. Stretching to a length of 149 metres and spanning 17.8 metres in width, the Mahendragiri boasts an impressive presence on the open waters. Navigating with a draft of 5.22 metres, this frigate is designed for agility and efficiency. Powered by a speed of 28 knots, it swiftly cuts through waves, offering exceptional maneuverability.

These warships has improved stealth features, advanced weapons and sensors. "Aligning with the country's resolute commitment to 'Aatma Nirbharata', a substantial 75 per cent of the orders for equipment and systems of Project 17A ships have been ordered on indigenous firms, including MSMEs," the Navy said in a statement.
