Siachen glacier, located in the eastern Karakoram Range in the Himalayas, is one of the five largest glaciers in the Karakoram, situated at an average altitude of 18,000 ft above sea level.

At 78 km long, it is the longest glacier in the Karakoram and second longest in the world's non-polar areas.

In Siachen, soldiers are at the risk of getting frostbite if their bare skin touches any metal object for more than 15 seconds.

Fainting spells and pounding headaches are frequent. Indian soldiers who stay at that altitude for long suffer from weight loss, loss of appetite, sleep disorders and memory loss. Speech blurring is also very common among the soldiers.
