Israeli Defense Forces launch airstrikes targeting Hamas' elite 'Al-Nukhba' commando unit

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) recently launched precise bombings in the Gaza Strip, zeroing down on a particularly dangerous foe inside Hamas, the 'Al-Nukhba' commando force. This elite faction was crucial in a recent bold incursion into southern Israel, which resulted in a massive attack on the country over the weekend.

The term 'Al-Nukhba,' which means 'elite' in Arabic, accurately conveys this group's unique prominence inside the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas' military organization. These agents are battle-hardened and highly talented combatants who are armed with cutting-edge weaponry and technology.

The Al-Nukhba elite forces, according to an IDF statement, are "handpicked individuals chosen by senior Hamas operatives, specifically tasked with orchestrating a range of daring and clandestine activities, including ambushes, raids, assaults, tunnel infiltrations, and the deployment of anti-tank missiles, rockets, and sniper fire."


Beyond their offensive operations against Israel, this commando unit serves a dual role in protecting senior Hamas leaders and safeguarding their strategic facilities. Notably, their tactical repertoire encompasses hostage-taking, a method frequently favored by Hamas in its operations.

Al-Nukhba members are subjected to arduous training in diverse disciplines, covering weapons proficiency, explosives handling, scuba diving, and advanced hand-to-hand combat. On the battlefield, they are typically armed with cutting-edge assault rifles, sniper rifles, machine guns, and possess access to a formidable arsenal, including rocket-propelled grenades and anti-tank missiles.

These elite units left an indelible mark during the 2014 Gaza War, executing successful attacks against Israeli forces. Regrettably, their dedication resulted in the loss of several members during Operation Protective Edge, launched by Israel in 2014.

In recent years, the Al-Nukhba forces have undergone substantial growth both in numbers and capabilities, solidifying their position as a linchpin within Hamas's military arsenal.
