Iran in deadlock: Revolutionary Guard blocks president, controls key state functions
Tensions between Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) have plunged the presidency into a political deadlock, with the Guard effectively taking control of critical state functions, according to sources cited by Iran International.

The IRGC has reportedly blocked Pezeshkian’s appointments and decisions, including his recent effort to nominate a new intelligence minister. All proposed candidates, including Hossein Dehghan, were rejected under pressure from IRGC chief Ahmad Vahidi, who insisted that, given ongoing wartime conditions, key leadership positions must be managed directly by the Guard.

A security cordon has been erected around Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, preventing government reports from reaching him. Pezeshkian has repeatedly sought urgent meetings with Khamenei but has received no response. Speculation about the Supreme Leader’s health is adding to uncertainties around Iran’s power structure.

Amid this power tussle, an internal crisis is reportedly unfolding within Khamenei’s inner circle. Sources indicate efforts to remove Ali Asghar Hejazi, a senior security official opposed to Mojtaba Khamenei’s potential succession. Hejazi had warned that elevating Mojtaba could hand full control of the country to the IRGC, sidelining civilian institutions permanently.

Earlier reports suggested Hejazi was targeted in an airstrike in Tehran in the first week of the ongoing war, though he is believed to have survived.
