An Israeli defence official was quoted by Reuters as saying the operation, aided by the US, had been planned for months, with the final launch date decided weeks ago.
The news agency reported citing Iranian state media that blasts were heard in parts of the capital. Reports also said mobile phone lines were cut in parts of eastern and western Tehran, while internet connectivity weakened in several areas, fuelling speculation of heightened security measures or infrastructure disruption.
Shortly after, both countries shut their airspace. Trading on the Tehran Stock Exchange was suspended, reflecting mounting uncertainty as the situation unfolded.
The attack follows weeks of heightened tension and comes months after a 12-day air war between Iran and Israel in June last year.
