Rolls-Royce mtu generator sets now power the stealth frigate INS Mahendragiri. INS Agray and INS Dunagiri also utilize Rolls-Royce mtu power solutions
New Delhi: Stealth frigate INS Mahendragiri, which was recently commissioned into the Indian Navy, is equipped with four mtu generator sets of the Rolls-Royce, each providing reliable electrical power to support complex operational requirements and ensure high mission availability, the company said on Monday.

On June 21, Prime Minister Narendra Modi presided over the commissioning of three Indian naval ships. Of these, INS Agray and INS Dunagiri are also powered by Rolls-Royce's mtu solutions, it said.

"INS Agray, an Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC) of the Arnala-class, is propelled by three mtu 20V 4000 M93L, enabling a maximum speed of 25 knots and providing superior manoeuvrability in shallow waters," Rolls-Royce said in a statement.

Designed by the Indian Navy's Warship Design Bureau, INS Mahendragiri features more than 75 per cent indigenous content, advanced stealth technology, and modern weapons and sensors.

"The ship is equipped with four Rolls-Royce mtu 12V 396 TE54 generator sets, each providing 1 MW of reliable electrical power to support complex operational requirements and ensure high mission availability," the statement said.

The Nilgiri-class (Project 17A) indigenous frigate was commissioned in Visakhapatnam on July 11, in the presence of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

INS Dunagiri, like INS Mahendragiri, is a stealth frigate of the same class, and it is "equipped with four mtu 12V 396 TE54 generator sets", the firm said.

"Rolls-Royce's relationship with the Indian Navy spans decades, marked by a legacy of trust and collaboration. The commissioning of INS Mahendragiri and the recent commissioning of INS Agray and INS Dunagiri mark significant milestones in our longstanding partnership with the Navy," Sashi Mukundan, Executive Vice President (Transformation), Rolls-Royce India, was quoted as saying in the statement.

"This partnership also underscores our commitment to strengthening India's indigenous defence capabilities and supporting the nation's long-term strategic objectives," Mukundan said.

The commissioning of these vessels in the past few weeks also mark a significant milestone in India's move towards naval modernisation and the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, officials said.

Our technology is designed to deliver dependable performance and operational assurance, and we remain dedicated to supporting the mission readiness of the fleet, ensuring that the Indian Navy is equipped to meet its operational objectives," G S Selwyn, Executive Vice President at Rolls-Royce in India, and Managing Director at Rolls-Royce Power Systems in India, said.

Rolls-Royce strengthens defence capability by providing scalable, future-ready technologies that enhance collective security and enable partner nations to build resilient, sovereign forces, the statement said.
