The Eastern Army Commander Lt Gen Rana Pratap Kalita Indian Army is completely prepared to meet any challenges and emerging situations in the Eastern, Northern or Western borders and will protect the territorial integrity of the country at all cost.

Kalita was in Guwahati to attend the Purvottar Swabhiman Utsav, to celebrate the contribution of the North Eastern Region in Nation Building when asked report of alleged intrusion from China’s side told media persons, “It is not 1962 anymore it is 2022 almost 60 years have passed. The nation as such has made great progress not only in infrastructure development as also capability development in all domains which include military, economic and foreign affairs.”

He said, “Indian is completely prepared to meet any challenges and emerging situations in the Eastern, Northern or Western borders and will protect the territorial integrity of the country at all cost”.

Kalita said that apart from four districts in Upper Assam, in Assam the insurgency situation is completely under control. “Majority of the people who have joined different groups have surrendered. Few groups of people based across Myanmar border are controlling those activities in districts closer to Myanmar border. With cooperation of the security agencies and support of people we will be able to control the security situation.”

The Eastern Army Commander said that Meghalaya, Tripura is peaceful, Mizoram development is taking place, in Assam except the four districts Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) is lifted, it is lifted from certain districts in Manipur and Nagaland. “It is all related to violence parameters. At the ministerial level which includes the Home ministry and Defence ministry the situation is assessed and stakeholders take a call on lifting the AFSPA.”

He added, “A lot of effort is made by security agencies and other stakeholders to bring normalcy. All of us are able to control the security situation to desired degree and have been able to bring down the violence parameter so as to give people an opportunity to aspire for peace and development.”

Terming the attack on Army vehicle on November 15 by proscribed militant outfit United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) on the Digboi- Pengeri road in Tinsukia district as an aberration, he said, “It was a major incident of firing on convoy. No one was injured. ULFA-I has claimed responsibility. As an organisation which is involved in insurgency they have to seek relevance so basically aimed at the continuity of extortion. They try to do certain violent activities which they have not been able to do so that their extortion does not dry up. This was just an aberration.”
