India vs China: Watch as Indian troops triumph in Sudan UN Peacekeeping tug of war

Indian and Chinese troops recently participated in a friendly "Tug of War" in Sudan, where both countries are part of a United Nations Peacekeeping mission. The video of the event, shared by news agency ANI, went viral on social media. In the game, the Indian team won, drawing cheers of "India, India..." from their supporters, while Chinese supporters cheered for their team.


United Nations Mission in Sudan
The United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) was established by the UN Security Council through Resolution 1590 on March 24, 2005. This followed the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement between the Sudanese government and the Sudan People's Liberation Movement on January 9, 2005. UNMIS is tasked with supporting the implementation of the agreement, providing humanitarian assistance, protecting human rights, and supporting the African Union Mission in Sudan.


UN Peacekeepers Day
The United Nations General Assembly designated May 29 as the “International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers” to commemorate the first UN peacekeeping mission, the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO), which began in Palestine in 1948. Since then, about 3,900 peacekeepers have died in the line of duty due to violence, accidents, and illnesses. On this day, UN offices, Member States, and NGOs hold ceremonies to honor the fallen peacekeepers.

India's Contribution to UN Peacekeeping
India has a long legacy of contributing to UN peacekeeping missions and is one of the largest troop contributors. Indian peacekeepers have served in challenging terrains and conditions, displaying exemplary courage and dedication. To date, 160 Indian soldiers have sacrificed their lives for the cause of peace. Presently, Indian forces are deployed in nine countries across various UN missions.

Training and Capacity Building
The Indian Army has established a Centre for UN Peacekeeping (CUNPK) in New Delhi to provide specialized training in peacekeeping operations. This center trains over 12,000 troops annually and hosts foreign delegations to share best practices. It also sends Mobile Training Teams to friendly countries for capacity building.

Women in Peacekeeping
India actively supports the UN's gender parity initiative, deploying Female Engagement Teams in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Abyei. Indian women military police are also serving in Golan Heights, and women staff officers and military observers are deployed in various missions. Major Radhika Sen has been recognized as the “Military Gender Advocate of the Year 2023” by the UN, highlighting India's commitment to empowering women in peacekeeping roles.

Future Commitments
During the UN Peacekeeping Ministerial in Accra, Ghana, in December 2023, India reaffirmed its commitment to future peacekeeping initiatives. India pledged an Infantry Battalion Group, various sub-groups, and training courses for the next two years to support UN requirements.

India continues to play a pivotal role in global peacekeeping efforts, showcasing its dedication to maintaining international peace and security.
