Army chiefs or their representatives from 31 African nations are being showcased the capability of the Indian industry at the maiden India Africa Army Chiefs Conclave in Pune. The visiting delegations are being given demonstrations of available systems like artillery guns, armoured vehicles, radars, simulators and ammunition as part of a strong pitch for India as an arms exporter.
"India has emerged as a leading defence exporter in recent years. A defence manufacturing ecosystem has been created here which has the advantage of abundant technical manpower. The Indian defence industry can work with you to fulfill your defence requirements," the defence minister said in his address at the conclave.
At present, India has a small presence in Africa when it comes to arms supplies. Industry insiders estimate that barely 10-15% of the annual defence exports (this year pitched at over Rs 13,000 crore) go to Africa.
