India pushes Russia to return citizens amid reports of 12 deaths, 16 missing in combat
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has confirmed the deaths of twelve Indian nationals serving in the Russian Armed Forces, with sixteen others reported missing. The announcement, made during the ministry’s weekly briefing on Friday, underscores the challenges faced by Indian authorities in ensuring the safety and repatriation of these individuals.

Breakdown of Indian Nationals in Russian Forces

Out of 126 known cases of Indian nationals recruited into the Russian Armed Forces, 96 individuals have been discharged and returned to India. Providing further details, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated, “Of the remaining 30, twelve have been confirmed dead, while sixteen have been categorised as ‘missing’ by Russian authorities. We remain engaged with the Russian side to ascertain their whereabouts and ensure the early release and repatriation of those who remain.”

Recent Fatalities and Official Assistance

Among the fatalities is Binil Babu, a 31-year-old from Kerala’s Thrissur district. Babu had travelled to Russia in April 2024 alongside another Indian national, Jain Kurien, after being promised a canteen job by an agent. He died in what is believed to be a drone attack.

Commenting on this incident, Jaiswal said, “The death of Binil Babu is extremely unfortunate. We have conveyed our condolences to his family. Our embassy is in touch with the Russian authorities to facilitate the return of his mortal remains to India at the earliest.”

The MEA further reported that another Indian national, currently receiving medical treatment in Moscow, is expected to return home soon after recovery. The ministry assured that the Indian Embassy in Moscow remains actively involved in assisting the affected families and coordinating with Russian authorities.

Missing Persons and Diplomatic Engagement

The MEA’s updates reveal that the whereabouts of 16 Indian nationals categorised as ‘missing’ remain unknown. According to Jaiswal, “The Russian side has categorised them as missing. We remain engaged with the Russian authorities to ascertain their whereabouts.”

The ministry highlighted its ongoing diplomatic efforts to ensure the safe return of all affected individuals. “The matter has been strongly taken up with Russian authorities in Moscow as well as with the Russian Embassy in New Delhi,” the spokesperson added.

Indian Nationals in Russian Military Service

Cases of Indian nationals serving in the Russian Armed Forces have come to light in recent years. Many reportedly joined under unclear circumstances, often through informal recruitment networks. The MEA’s data indicates that out of 126 cases, 96 individuals have successfully returned to India following their discharge from military service.

Binil Babu’s case sheds light on recruitment practices that have drawn scrutiny. Reports suggest he and his companion were misled by an agent with false promises of civilian employment, only to find themselves enlisted in military roles.

Energy Sanctions and India’s Position

During the same briefing, Jaiswal addressed concerns related to sanctions targeting Russia’s energy sector and their implications for India. “Our oil purchases have been, and will continue to be, guided by our energy security requirements and prevailing global circumstances,” he noted. This statement underscores India’s stance on balancing domestic energy needs with geopolitical pressures.
