India-Pakistan air battle during Op Sindoor: What is an ELINT, AEW&C aircraft and why the IAF’s kill is important

In what maybe one of the most high-profile revelations of India-Pakistan escalation, the Indian Air Force (IAF) said that it scored the largest ever recorded surface-to-air kill.

During Operation Sindoor, a long-range strike from about 300 kilometres brought down what the IAF believes was either an ELINT or an AEW&C aircraft, both considered high-value surveillance and command platforms.

Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal AP Singh said, “We have at least five fighters confirmed kills and one large aircraft, which could be either an ELINT aircraft or an AEW&C aircraft… taken on at a distance of about 300 kilometres.”


The strike also targeted key Pakistan Air Force bases. At Shahbaz Jacobabad airfield, Singh said half an F-16 hangar was destroyed, damaging aircraft inside, while two command and control centres and six radar systems were also neutralised.

What is an ELINT aircraft?
ELINT stands for Electronic Intelligence. These aircraft intercept and analyse electronic signals from enemy radars, communication systems, and air defence networks.

ELINT aircraft give military planners critical data on the opponent’s surveillance coverage, enabling them to avoid detection and launch precision strikes.

What is an AEW&C Aircraft and its role in air battles?

AEW&C stands for Airborne Early Warning and Control. These aircraft carry advanced radar systems that can detect and track multiple targets, airborne, maritime, or ground, over long distances.

AEW&C platforms are essential for spotting incoming aircraft early, directing interceptors, and coordinating large-scale operations in real time. They act as flying command centres that keep air forces informed and responsive.

Why this kill was important during Op Sindoor?
Destroying an ELINT or AEW&C aircraft has strategic consequences. It reduces enemy's ability to monitor airspace, coordinate defences, and respond to threats.

Singh’s statement very well hints that the IAF’s long-range strike not only delivered a tactical victory but also dealt a major blow to Pakistan’s aerial surveillance and command network.
