India expresses support for Philippines amidst South China Sea tensions

India has pledged its support to the Philippines as tensions escalate in the South China Sea. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, during a press conference in Manila, reaffirmed India's commitment to helping the Philippines maintain peace and freedom in the Indo-Pacific region.

The recent incident near Second Thomas Shoal in the Spratly Islands, where a routine Philippine mission was disrupted, has raised concerns. Deputy Foreign Ministers from both countries have engaged in discussions to address the issue.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties

Jaishankar also met with Philippine President Bongbong Marcos to expand bilateral ties and boost collaboration. He conveyed personal greetings from President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, highlighting the warm sentiments towards the partnership.

Indian Navy's Role
Jaishankar briefed President Marcos on the Indian Navy's deployments in the Red Sea and the Arabian Sea to counter threats, which was appreciated by the Philippines. He emphasized the need for closer cooperation between India and the Philippines to shape the emerging model in the changing world.

Philippines Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Enrique Manalo, reaffirmed the strong interest of both countries in ensuring a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific. They are discussing the issue regularly, indicating a united front against aggressive actions in the region.

Disputes between China and the Philippines over reefs in the South China Sea have escalated, with a recent clash near Second Thomas Shoal marking a significant escalation. Manila has protested against the aggressive actions of China's Coast Guard and maritime militias.
