Hypersonic weapons, capable of traveling at speeds greater than Mach 5 (around 6,120 km/h), have emerged as a key focus of modern defence strategies. These missiles can carry both conventional and nuclear warheads and evade most existing air defence systems, offering significant tactical advantages.
The missile, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), is designed to carry various payloads over distances exceeding 1,500 kilometers. The Defence Ministry confirmed the missile's successful terminal maneuvers and high-accuracy impact, based on data from multiple tracking systems deployed during the trial.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh described the test as a "historic moment," emphasizing India’s growing capabilities in advanced military technologies. He stated, “India has achieved a major milestone by successfully conducting a flight trial of a long-range hypersonic missile from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island, off the coast of Odisha.”
Hypersonic Capabilities and Global Context
Hypersonic missiles, capable of traveling at speeds exceeding Mach 5 (approximately 6,120 km/h), can carry conventional or nuclear warheads. Advanced versions can achieve speeds beyond Mach 15, making them a critical asset for modern warfare.Globally, Russia and China lead in hypersonic missile development, with the United States also making significant investments in such technologies. Countries like France, Germany, Australia, Japan, Iran, and Israel are similarly engaged in advancing their hypersonic capabilities.
