Following the thaw between India and China at two long-standing points of tension—Demchok and Depsang—in Eastern Ladakh, the disengagement is expected to be completed by October 28-29, PTI reported citing sources.

The agreement follows extensive discussions at both diplomatic and military levels, Army sources told PTI.

"Agreement framework was first agreed upon at diplomatic level, then military level talks took place," they said.

The patrolling pact, which came ahead of the BRICS Summit which marked a bilateral meeting between PM Modi and President Xi, aims to ease tensions along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), where the two countries have experienced several standoffs in recent years.

Patrolling will begin at the two friction points once the disengagement is done and both sides will move their respective troops and dismantle temporary structures, the report further said.

Eventually, the patrolling status is expected to move back to pre-April 2020 level, they added.

The relationship between the two countries had significantly deteriorated following a violent clash in the Galwan Valley in June 2020, marking the most serious military conflict between the two sides in decades.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed on October 21 in Delhi that the agreement aims to address the tensions that surfaced in 2020.

On October 23, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping endorsed the accord on patrolling and disengagement along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh. This event occurred during their bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia.
