India and Africa’s biggest state of Algeria explored to boost counter-terror partnership in the backdrop of common terror threat from Pak-based Salafi forces.

The issue was in focus when the Indian MPs on a tour of the key states in the Arab World met key stakeholders in Algeria (currently a non-permanent member of the UNSC), ET has learnt.

The delegation to Algeria (known for its secular credentials), is being led by BJP MP Baijayant Panda, and is visiting capital Algiers after its tour to Bahrain, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.

Besides Panda, other members of the delegation are AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi, BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, former chairperson of the National Commission for Women and Rajya Sabha MP Rekha Sharma, BJP MP Phangnon Konyak, BJP MP Satnam Singh Sandhu and former foreign secretary Harsh Shringla.

During their four-day visit, the members of the delegation is focusing on cross-border terrorism, especially after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people.

“Taking India’s message to the world! A warm welcome to all-party delegation of Members of Parliament led by Baijayant Jay Panda, upon their arrival in #Algiers today afternoon,” said a post on X by the Indian Embassy in Algeria.

Delivering a speech at Algiers, which he highlighted on X, Shringla said, “At event in *Algeria* attended by Algerian media, think tanks, Indian community, officials from Algeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and friends of India in Algeria, along with the leader @PandaJay and other members of the All-Party Parliamentary delegation, I said India and Algeria have similar experiences of terrorism and should unite against the shared face of terrorism and extremism with Pakistan at its epicentre.”

Algeria that has battled terrorism in the past have had lukewarm ties with Pakistan over ISI's alleged links with Algerian terror group Islamic Salvation Front.
