Guwahati: In the lines of International Police Organization( INTERPOL), North eastern states including West Bengal will come up with NEPOL which will facilitate cooperation between the states of the region in tackling insurgency, cross border crime and smuggling.

Two day DGP/IGP conference of North eastern states which will kick start on July 29 will see the launch of NEPOL and cyber dome. The 24th conference will be attended by heads of Central police organisations operating in Northeast India.

Assam Additional Director General of police (Special Branch) Pallab Bhattacharya told ET, “In the lines of Interpol which is facilitating international police cooperation, we are launching NEPOL for greater cooperation among states of the region. West Bengal and Sikkim will be members of it besides seven states of the region.”

Cyberdome, the hi-tech centre for cyber security will be launched shortly. Assam budget for 2017-18 has made provision for it.

North eastern militants have come together and formed United Liberation Front of Western South East Asia ( UNLFW), an umbrella organization comprising of the United Liberation Front of Assam (Independent), Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagaland (Khaplang), Kamatapur Liberation Organization (KLO) and National Democratic Front of Bodoland (Songbijit).

This organisation has orchestrated several strikes on security forces including the attack on Army convoy in Chandel in Manipur in which 18 army were killed June, 2015.

Bhattacharya added, “The conference will deliberate on intelligence sharing mechanism besides cooperation of security forces dealing with militants, cross border crimes. We are working on improving the crime conviction rate, presently the rate is lesser than national average in Assam.”
