The Indian Air Force (IAF) is moving to enhance its operational flexibility by pursuing air-launched drones and loitering munitions, reflecting a broader global shift in how modern conflicts are expected to be fought.

The IAF has recently issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) for drones that can be deployed from helicopters, along with a Request for Information (RFI) for loitering munitions designed for deployment from transport aircraft. The initiative signals a push to integrate unmanned systems across a wider range of aerial platforms.

Expanding operational roles of aircraft

The introduction of air-deployable drones and loitering munitions is expected to significantly broaden the offensive capabilities of the IAF. By enabling transport aircraft and helicopters to launch such systems, the force can extend the operational envelope of these platforms beyond traditional roles.

This approach could also help ease pressure on the fighter fleet, which is currently facing a shortfall. By assigning certain strike and reconnaissance tasks to unmanned systems, fighter aircraft can be reserved for more critical missions.

Capabilities and specifications

The proposed systems are expected to perform a wide range of functions, including precision strikes, electronic warfare, target acquisition and acting as decoys.

Drones intended for deployment from transport aircraft are expected to have a range of around 500 km, carry a warhead of approximately 30 kg, and operate at speeds between 350 and 400 kmph.

Meanwhile, drones launched from helicopters are expected to have a shorter range of about 80 km and carry a minimum payload of 500 grams.

Global shift towards swarm warfare

The IAF’s initiative aligns with similar developments worldwide, where militaries are increasingly focusing on drone swarms and air-launched unmanned systems.

The United States is developing comparable capabilities under programmes such as “air launched effects,” which envision coordinated swarms of networked drones capable of overwhelming enemy defences. Another US Air Force initiative, known as “Gremlins,” is also focused on deploying multiple unmanned systems from aircraft.

Other major powers, including China, Russia and the United Kingdom, are also working on similar technologies, underscoring the growing importance of unmanned aerial systems in future warfare.

Strategic advantage of drone swarms

Air-launched drone swarms offer a significant tactical advantage by allowing forces to strike from a distance while minimising risk to personnel and high-value assets.

Such systems can be used to saturate enemy defences, forcing adversaries to respond to a mix of low-cost unmanned platforms and more sophisticated threats. This approach can help create openings in heavily defended areas and enhance the effectiveness of follow-on operations.

As militaries continue to adapt to evolving battlefield dynamics, the integration of air-launched drones and loitering munitions is likely to play a central role in shaping future combat strategies.
