NEW DELHI: US Secretary of State John Kerry who extended his stay here by two days utilised his time on Thursday engaging with his Russian counterpart over phone and calling on visiting Egyptian President Sisi.

Kerry and his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov spoke over phone on coordinating anti-terror efforts in Syria, according to a Russian Foreign Ministry statement.

The two sides discussed current situation in Syria as Lavrov drew Kerry's attention in fighting real terrorists operating from behind the opposition forces, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry statement.

Meanwhile it has been learnt that Kerry also called on visiting Egyptian President who arrived here on Thursday evening on a three-day trip. Egypt and USA share strong military bonds. The meeting between Sisi and Kerry in Delhi was not on the original schedule of either of the two leaders.

It is however not known if Kerry visited any other destination in the national capital on Thursday. He is scheduled to fly out to China on Friday afternoon for the G-20 summit. Kerry extended his stay after postponing his visit to Germany on Wednesday.
